Sizes around DL
Printing on DL
A4 folded twice into thirds measures 210 × 99 mm, which leaves 5 mm of clearance at each side and 5 mm top to bottom. That is comfortable for one to three sheets. An A5 sheet folded in half (148 × 105 mm) also fits, and an A6 card or postcard goes in flat.
DL is the classic window envelope. The DIN 680 window is 90 × 45 mm, set 20 mm from the left edge and 15 mm from the bottom, which lines up with the address block on a standard DIN 5008 letter. Wallet flaps (on the long edge) are the norm; gummed, self-seal and peel-and-seal are all common.
Royal Mail treats DL as a Letter (up to 240 × 165 mm and 5 mm thick). Most inkjet and laser printers take DL through the manual feed or a dedicated envelope slot, and DL is a preset in every print driver.
Where DL comes from
DL stands for Dimension Lengthwise, from the German DIN Lang. It came out of DIN 678, the German envelope standard, as an envelope for a third of an A4 sheet. ISO 269 (1985) took it into the international C-series envelope family, where it sits alongside C4, C5 and C6 even though its proportions do not follow the C-series formula.
Questions people ask about DL
What size is a DL envelope?
220 × 110 mm, or 8.66 × 4.33 in. It holds A4 folded into thirds.
What does DL stand for?
Dimension Lengthwise, from the German DIN Lang. It was designed for one third of an A4 sheet.
Is DL the same as a No. 10 envelope?
No, but they do the same job. No. 10 is 241.3 × 104.8 mm, so it is 21 mm longer and 5 mm shorter than DL. Each holds its own region's letter sheet folded in thirds.
Where does the window go on a DL envelope?
The standard DIN 680 window is 90 × 45 mm, 20 mm in from the left edge and 15 mm up from the bottom.
Can I print on DL envelopes at home?
Yes. Almost every desktop printer accepts DL through the manual feed. Choose DL in the print dialog and feed the envelope flap-side as the printer manual shows.
