RA & SRA untrimmed sheets

RA and SRA are untrimmed press sheets from ISO 217 (1995). RA0 is 860 × 1220 mm and SRA0 is 900 × 1280 mm, both a little larger than A0, so a job can be printed with bleed and crop marks and then cut down to a finished A size.

From A4U (240 × 330 mm) to RA0 (860 × 1,220 mm).

About this series

Commercial printers rarely print on finished A sizes. They print on oversize sheets, then guillotine the edges away to leave clean A-size pages with ink running right to the edge. ISO 217 defines those sheets as RA (raw format A) and SRA (supplementary raw format A).

RA0 has an area of about 1.05 m² at 860 × 1220 mm. SRA0 is about 1.15 m² at 900 × 1280 mm. Both halve like the A series: RA4 is 215 × 305 mm and SRA4 is 225 × 320 mm, against A4 at 210 × 297 mm. The RA series gives roughly 5 mm of extra margin, enough for crop marks; SRA gives roughly 15 mm, enough for crop marks, bleed and a printing-press gripper edge.

SRA3 (320 × 450 mm, 12.6 × 17.72 in) is the size that matters most. It is the standard sheet for digital presses and takes one A3 page or two A4 pages side by side, each with 3 mm bleed. SRA3+ (320 × 460 mm) and SRA3++ (320 × 464 mm) exist for presses that need a longer gripper margin. SRA2 (450 × 640 mm) and SRA1 (640 × 900 mm) are the litho equivalents.

Japan uses its own untrimmed sheets, defined in JIS P 0202 as A0U to A4U; A4U is 240 × 330 mm and gives even more room than SRA4. In North America the equivalent idea is printing Letter on 12 × 18 in or 13 × 19 in stock.

A practical tip: when you ask for a quote, say how the job imposes on the sheet, for example two-up A4 with bleed on SRA3. Printers price by the sheet, so a layout that fits SRA3 costs less than one that forces them onto SRA2.

Questions about this series

What is SRA3 paper size?

SRA3 is 320 × 450 mm (12.6 × 17.72 in). It is larger than A3 (297 × 420 mm) so that an A3 page, or two A4 pages, can be printed with bleed and crop marks and trimmed to size.

What is the difference between RA and SRA?

Both are untrimmed sheets. RA is about 5 percent larger than the A size by area (RA4 215 × 305 mm). SRA is about 15 percent larger (SRA4 225 × 320 mm) and leaves room for bleed, crop marks and the press gripper.

How many A4 pages fit on SRA3?

Two. SRA3 is 320 × 450 mm; two A4 pages side by side need 297 mm across and 420 mm down, which leaves room for 3 mm bleed on every edge plus crop marks.

What is RA4 used for?

RA4 (215 × 305 mm) is an oversize A4 for printing with crop marks but no bleed. It also appears in some inkjet and photo-printer trays. After trimming to 210 × 297 mm, the finished sheet is a normal A4.
