Transitional PA & F sizes
The PA and F series are compromise sizes that fill gaps between ISO and inch systems. PA4 (210 × 280 mm) fits inside both A4 and Letter and was proposed in an ISO 216 draft; F4 (210 × 330 mm) is the long foolscap sheet still sold across South-East Asia.
From PA9 (35 × 52 mm) to F0 (841 × 1,321 mm).

About this series
Two small series sit between the ISO and North American worlds. Neither is in ISO 216 as published, but both are real: PA sizes appear in printer drivers and some magazine trims, and F4 paper is stacked in every stationery shop in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
The PA series starts at PA0 (840 × 1120 mm) and halves down to PA10 (26 × 35 mm), keeping a 3:4 proportion throughout. PA4 is 210 × 280 mm (8.27 × 11.02 in): the width of A4 and a height just under Letter's 279.4 mm. It was put forward in a draft of ISO 216 as a page that could print on either system without scaling, and it was not adopted. It remains useful for exactly that purpose, and some magazines use it as a trim size.
The F series starts at F0 (841 × 1321 mm) and halves to F10 (26 × 41 mm). F4 is 210 × 330 mm (8.27 × 12.99 in), the width of A4 with the 13 in length of the old British foolscap folio. It is called folio, foolscap or F4 depending on the country, and is used for legal forms, government documents and school exam papers. The F name also appears in Sweden's SIS 014711, which defined further intermediate series between A, B and C.
PA4 relates to A4 and Letter as their common inner rectangle. F4 relates to Oficio (216 × 330 mm) and Government Legal (215.9 × 330.2 mm), which share its length but are 6 mm wider; it is 33 mm taller than A4.
A practical tip: if you must produce one PDF for readers on both A4 and Letter, set the page to PA4 with normal margins. It will print on either sheet at 100 percent with even borders.
Questions about this series
What is PA4 paper size?
PA4 is 210 × 280 mm (8.27 × 11.02 in), the width of A4 and a height just under Letter. It fits inside both sheets, so a PA4 document prints on A4 or Letter at 100 percent.
What is F4 paper size?
F4 is 210 × 330 mm (8.27 × 12.99 in). It has the width of A4 and a length of 13 in, and is sold as folio or foolscap in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.
Is F4 the same as Legal paper?
No. F4 is 210 × 330 mm; US Legal is 215.9 × 355.6 mm, 6 mm wider and 25 mm longer. F4 is closer to Government Legal (215.9 × 330.2 mm) and to Oficio (216 × 330 mm).
What are the PA series sizes?
PA0 840 × 1120 mm, PA1 560 × 840, PA2 420 × 560, PA3 280 × 420, PA4 210 × 280, PA5 140 × 210, PA6 105 × 140, PA7 70 × 105, PA8 52 × 70, PA9 35 × 52 and PA10 26 × 35 mm. All keep a 3:4 proportion.
