About this series
Newspaper formats are set by the web presses that print them, so they vary from country to country and even from title to title. Three families cover the world: broadsheet, tabloid and the intermediate Berliner. A fourth term, compact, is a tabloid page carrying a broadsheet-style paper.
The broadsheet is the largest. A British broadsheet page is 375 × 597 mm (14.76 × 23.5 in); the full unfolded sheet of two facing pages is 597 × 749 mm. American broadsheets are narrower and shorter at 381 × 578 mm, and individual titles differ: the New York Times prints on a 305 × 559 mm page, the Wall Street Journal on 305 × 578 mm. South African broadsheets are 410 × 578 mm.
A tabloid page is roughly half a broadsheet, 280 × 430 mm (11.02 × 16.93 in), and is the format of most popular dailies and free papers. The Canadian tabloid is smaller at 260 × 368 mm, the Norwegian at 280 × 400 mm. The Berliner (315 × 470 mm) sits between the two and is used across continental Europe; the Swiss (320 × 475 mm), Rhenish (350 × 520 mm), Nordisch (400 × 570 mm) and Ciner (350 × 500 mm) formats are regional press sizes of the same kind.
None of these match ISO sizes, but a tabloid page is close to A3 (297 × 420 mm), a Berliner is between A3 and B3, and a British broadsheet page is close to A2 (420 × 594 mm). The newspaper tabloid should not be confused with US Tabloid paper (279.4 × 431.8 mm), though the two are nearly the same size.
A practical tip: when placing an advert, ask for the printer's type area and column widths rather than the page size. Newsprint trims are loose, and the live area is usually 10 to 15 mm inside the page edge.
