Every size is exactly half of the one before it. Hover a sheet to see the fold that makes the next one.

Fold any ISO sheet in half and you get the next size down, with exactly the same proportions. That single rule is why A4 is the shape it is.

How it works

Three rules explain almost every size on this site

  1. A0 is one square metre. Every ISO size is a fraction of it, which is why paper weight in grams per square metre works so neatly.
  2. The sides are in the ratio 1 : √2. Halve the long side and the proportions do not change. Scaling A4 to A3 is always 141%.
  3. North America kept the inch. Letter is 8½ × 11 in, not a fraction of anything, so it never scales cleanly. That is the whole A4 vs Letter problem.
